Three Methods to Beat Procrastination In 10 Minutes or Less

February 28, 2023

Struggling to get started on doing things? Try these methods ranging between 1, 2 and 10 minutes.

1. If it takes just 1 minute to do, do it right now

For example, if you need to take out the trash, wash your cup, water your plants, etc… you might as well just do it now instead of adding it into your to-do list for later (which may take about the same amount of time).

Seriously, just go through the minute and it’s over.

2. Simplify the task into something doable in 2 minutes

This is useful when you don’t really want to do the task.

If it’s exercise, simply start moving your body however you like, or follow a 2-minute workout video. If it’s reading a book, you can read just one page. If it’s work, focus on doing the easiest first steps. If it’s a household chore, start with the simplest one like organising the table.

Not sure what exactly to do? Brainstorming a to-do list of what to do next counts too!

If you’re skeptical about this method, limit yourself to only 2 minutes. One way to consistently get more done is by attaching this 2-minute session to another activity that you already do daily, such as before brushing your teeth, before having your meal, etc.

3. Gamify the task by challenging yourself to finish it in 10 minutes

To apply this method, pick that one massive task that you’ve been trying to do.

Sometimes we realise that a task takes way less time than we think. What if you could finish it in 10 minutes? Turn this into a game with yourself. Set a 10 minute timer, and see if you can finish it (or how much you can get done) . You may be surprised!

When the 10 minutes is up and you’re not done yet, simply continue to finish it without a timer (if you’re confident that it will just take a couple of minutes more), or set a timer extension to finish it for real, since you’ve already gotten started.

Procrastination can be a difficult habit to break, but it is possible. The key is to find what works best for you and stick with it. With a little bit of creativity, effort and determination, you can overcome procrastination and achieve your goals.
